This learning series is all about customizing the patient experience to the majority of those 55 million Americans currently 65 and older along with a predicted growth to 25% of the US population over the next forty years. The ADA in its demographic data have presented that this age group of patients will be a significant driving force for growth in our practices along with the strong need for advanced dental care. This four module series of courses will demonstrate how this unique group creates unique opportunities from both treatment and business aspects.
MODULE TWO: The Hygiene Side of Treating Geriatric Patients
Saliva is the “liquid gold” of the mouth. It serves as the mouth’s natural cleansing agent, carrying calcium and phosphate to aid in the remineralization process of the enamel and dentin Saliva serves as a buffer to protect the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal mucosa from orally ingested acid or acid regurgitation from the stomach. Saliva has a protective role, as it contains many antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agents that help provide a balanced microbial flora. Yet, studies indicate that up to 55% of the population experiences symptoms of xerostomia. This course is designed to equip the dental hygienist with the best practices for xerostomia identification and management.
