PART 1: What’s New with MIOSHA? (2 Hours)

OSHA and MIOSHA require that employees in dental practices are required to participate in annual safety training, which includes general workplace safety, bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication, hazardous waste compliance requirements and any additional information that is pertinent to meeting COVID-19 worker safety requirements. This course will enable participants to review their safety protocols and make any necessary updates.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the OSHA/MIOSHA regulations that apply to their dental practice
  • Discuss documentation and training requirements for compliance with MIOSHA regulations
  • Implement strategies for compliance with all federal, state and local safety standards


PART 2: Infection Control Update (1.5 Hours)

This course meets the new Michigan Board of Dentistry requirement for infection control training for licensure renewal. Topics will include CDC Guidelines for Infection Control, CDC recommendations for sterilization and disinfection (including dental handpieces), PPE for aerosol and non-aerosol-generating procedures, particularly respiratory protection for the dental team.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the CDC infection prevention and control guidelines that are applicable to dentistry
  • Describe appropriate sterilization methods for dental instruments and handpieces
  • Identify the characteristics of environmental disinfectants that meet CDC guidelines
  • Complete the CDC Infection Prevention and Control Checklist to assess their infection prevention and control protocols for effectiveness


Part 3: Is Your Practice Truly HIPAA Compliant – and Your Patient Data Secure? (1.5 hours)

The HIPAA rules require annual training updates for employees. This course is designed to meet that requirement with a review of compliance requirements for protecting the privacy and security of the protected health information in dental practices. Special emphasis will be placed on needed security risk assessments and implementation of security protocols to protect patient information from security breaches.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the responsibilities that dental practices have under the HIPAA rules
  • Evaluate their practices’ level of compliance with security protocols for patient information
  • Implement strategies for enhancing security measures in the face of increasing security threats


Part 4: Do the Right Thing – Ethics and Jurisprudence for Dental Professionals (1.5 hours)

Dental professionals are expected to provide services to patients within certain ethical parameters and within the laws under which they are licensed to practice dentistry, dental hygiene and dental assisting. This course meets the new Michigan Board of Dentistry continuing education requirement for training in ethics and jurisprudence. Topics will include the ADA/MDA code of ethics and conduct, the rules for dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants from the MI Board of Dentistry, and discussion of delegation of functions by dentists to dental hygienists and dental assistants. Rules for dental therapists in Michigan will also be discussed.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify and access the MI Board of Dentistry rules
  • Differentiate between duties that may be delegated to dental assistants and hygienists
  • Identify duties that may be delegated to unlicensed dental assistants
  • Describe potential liabilities of violating dental practice rules
